Welcome to the team Michelle

Dr. Michelle Engels is a clinical psychologist from Australia who achieved her Doctorate at the University of Queensland in 2010.  She has worked as a mental health counselor for over 10 years and has extensive experience in substance misuse, chronic illness and traumatic stress.  Dr. Engels has been active in the Australian academic communities, contributing to numerous large-scale research projects and serving as a guest lecturer in the schools of psychology and medicine at numerous universities throughout Queensland.  Dr. Engels has a strong interest in international development and mental health programming in this context.  In 2014 she served as an Australian Ambassador for Development, working alongside Handicap International (Kenya-Somalia Program) as a Human Rights Program Officer.  In this role she provided technical advice on child protection matters, mental health future strategic development, and implemented and evaluated an armed violence reduction project.  Michelle is a passionate advocate of mental health service delivery in international development contexts and she is looking forward to making a positive contribution to the Burmese migrant community in Mae Sot.  Michelle just arrived in Mae Sot at the end of March, and is now already hard at work establishing connections with our partners on the border.  Michelle photo
