Unsafe abortion is one of the leading causes of maternal mortality on both sides of the Thailand-Burma border. Although abortion is severely restricted in Burma, abortion is legal in Thailand for cases of rape, when a girl is 15 or under, in cases of physical/mental health problems and for fetal abnormalities. But despite the burden of unsafe abortion on maternal health in the region, there is currently no access to safe abortion in Thailand for undocumented and refugee women from Burma even in cases where legal abortion is available. BBP’s reproductive health team has spent over four years building a pilot project with Mae Tao Clinic and Mae Sot Hospital to ensure that undocumented women who qualify for legal abortions can be referred to Thai hospitals for safe and legal care. We have done so with the support of New Zealand’s Women’s National Abortion Action Campaign.
